ACS introduces new motion controller and drive for high-precision applications.

ASC Motion Control introduces a new motion controller/drive, based on the EtherCAT standard and specifically designed for high-precision applications in markets such as Semicon, additive manufacturing, and laser technology. ACS states that the CMxa and UDMxa are intended for applications with micron to nanometer resolution, with high requirements for positioning and speed control. In this article, we’d like to share more about the solutions where VARIODRIVE Aandrijf- en Besturingstechniek would choose these products.

The new products are easy to implement and offer the most advanced motion control capabilities along with new optional safety features like SS1 and STO. Our Managing Director, André de Lijser, discusses the applicability of these products:

Applying motion control in demanding markets.

SPiiPlusCMxa Motion Control units

These products are designed to be used in the most demanding markets, such as wafer handling machines, display production, medical robots, 3D printers, or laser cutting and engraving machines. Virtually any application that requires high demands in terms of positional accuracy, low settling times, or minimal speed ripple can benefit from this product.

Consider applications involving Multiple Input Multiple Output systems, like gantry systems where linear position needs to be decoupled from yaw movement. Or applications where high load variations occur during movement, such as dynamically shifting the center of gravity and increasing mass during motion. I could name another five applications where we would apply this product.

Essentially, machine builders need to balance the actual requirements of the application with the controllers and drives that can be used. However, in practice, machine builders might not always have a clear overview of these possibilities. This is where VARIODRIVE can provide support – we help you make informed decisions and arrive at the optimal selection.”

SPiiPlusCMxa motion controller

The CMxa is an EtherCAT master motion controller with integrated motor drive(s) that employs powerful servo control algorithms to maximize motion system performance. This controller can drive almost any motor or stage, ensuring high system flexibility. Of course, this controller works with the SPiiPlus ADK Suite, offering advanced servo tuning and application development capabilities.

The technical advantages are summarized as follows:

The CMxa can be configured to control up to 64 total axes and includes 1, 2, or 3 built-in drives at up to 265Vac and 30A peak current output per axis. In addition to its integrated motor drives, system designers can control a large variety of distributed EtherCAT drives. The CMxa’s fixed servo sampling and update rate and high-speed distributed clock EtherCAT network provides the tightly synchronized real-time control needed for sophisticated multi-axis machine designs.

UDMxa motion drive

The UDMxa is a new EtherCAT drive that can be controlled by any other SPiiPlus controller. It features a powerful multi-processor architecture that incorporates universal motor and encoder technology. Advanced capabilities like ServoBoost, MIMO gantry control, high-speed position event generation, and axis position registration enable a high-precision and robust motion control system.
